The COVID-19 Lockdown has impacted all of our lives since last month. Uncertainty of what the future holds is the main concern for everyone. Being confined to our homes for such a long period of time with limited access to outside visits has caused a lot of strain.
Our relationships have been challenged the most. In this trying time we have been experiencing a lot of mixed emotions and feelings. I would just like to let you all know that it is normal if you are feeling like you are on a roller coaster ride.
I am a wife, a mother of two boys aged 22 and 19yrs and for the last four weeks, I have been on such a wheel of emotions. I had two choices: Let Covid-19 Lockdown get to me by complaining and being unhappy about it or choose to deal with it head-on by embracing this change. I decided to deal with this situation by focusing my time and energy on the positives. Yes, there are many positives, we just have to be aware and receptive to it.
I would like to share some positives that is currently getting me through this trying time:
1. Improve Your Mental Health Daily
I always thought that living a healthy lifestyle is all about eating right and getting enough exercise. Taking care of your mental health is also part of that equation. It impacts our relationships, our ability to work productively and how well we can recover from setbacks and hardships. It does not mean that by being mentally healthy that you will never experience any hardships or emotional challenges. It does, however, help you to cope and get back on track.
2. Mindfulness Meditation
Meditation improves your focus and concentration, reduces stress, improves emotional health and well being. Research shows that practicing mindfulness meditation, the grey matter in your brain’s amygdala (a region known for its role in stress) can become smaller.
I started spending 10 minutes every morning and 10 minutes every evening practicing meditation. I sit by myself with no distractions, some soothing music to help me concentrate and relax. As the days has gone by I started to feel more relaxed, more at peace with myself. I started to gain more mental and physical energy to get through my day and finish the necessary tasks at ease.
3. Focus on Self Care
Take time to get organised. I started to clear out the accumulated clutter in my home which gave me a sense of space and freshness. Choose exercises that you like while remaining socially distanced, this will keep you fit and healthy. Start consuming foods that give you nourishment, remember you need a healthy body to have a healthy mind. Sleep can have a huge effect on how you feel so not getting enough sleep can cause major health issues. Have a sleep routine and stick to it. Before bed avoid being on your laptop or other electronic devices. I have tried and tested these and have found I sleep comfortably through the night and wake up refreshed in the morning.
In conclusion, why waste your time and energy on negativity and complaining, let us focus on the positives and better ourselves during this lockdown. When a lockdown is finally over we will then be ready to take on life with zest and zeal. I hope that I have managed to give you some food for thought and challenge you to try these positives so you can change and transform your life.
